I sought out working with Rey because I was hoping to gain a deeper connection with my body. Dissociation has been a consistent block to this in my life and I finally felt ready to challenge that in a somatic practice. Rey's gentle presence and way of supporting me in sessions has created a space where I feel safe to connect my body and mind. Their guidance has allowed me to explore connections I had previously been unable to access. This has helped me to learn how to work within my window of tolerance in a new and exciting way. I deeply appreciate her insights and intuitive nature. --CS

What is somatic therapy?

What does a session look like?
"Soma" means body

Somatic work encompasses all body-centered healing modalities.

It is very common for us to lose touch with our bodies, to ignore our gut feelings, and to dismiss our emotions in favor of logic and reason. Whether through religion or general socialization, we’ve been given the message that bodies are shameful, a belief that takes away our ability to connect with ourselves and others.

Somatic work can help rewrite your relationship to your body, repairing years of disconnection, isolation, and trauma. Through somatic practice, you can reclaim your body, recognize its cues, and learn what it means to really trust yourself.

Especially for those of us in marginalized communities, somatic work can be the missing puzzle piece for deep healing, self-acceptance, and the confidence to live authentically.

The Typical Flow of a Session (~50-55 minutes):

  • Opening (~5-10 minutes): We will talk about what you want to focus on and do some grounding to get settled into our space

  • Majority of the session (~35-40 minutes): Guiding you through mindfully directing your attention inward with the goal of increasing your receptivity to felt sensations in your body. A lot of times there will be a specific challenge or situation that you’re focusing on while we tune into body sensations. If you are seeing me specifically for BBTRS®, this part of the session will include active breathing

  • Closing (~5-10 minutes): Integrating what came up for you, reorienting to your surroundings, and making sure you feel grounded before you go back into your day

ABOUT

What kind of practitioner am I? To be our most vulnerable selves in front of someone, we have to feel safely contained and shielded from the harsh judgments of the outside world—by someone who is comfortable with whatever comes up. I am trained in trauma-informed somatic practices, and my number one priority is creating a space in which you feel safe, seen, and validated in your lived experience. I want to understand what’s important to you—like, actually important, underneath all of the social obligations and masks we wear to survive in a culture that is unfriendly to anyone who is perceived as “other.” In sessions, I like to work with people, collaborating to reach insights and progressing toward a shared goal. The better we are at collaborating (in plain terms, how well we vibe), the better able you’ll be to access deep material to process. Together, we will explore the available somatic techniques to find what resonates with your nervous system.

Prior to beginning this work, I was an academic researcher, author, and educator. I have a PhD in English Language & Literature and was a tenured professor before deciding that academia wasn’t the path for me. My love of learning and teaching is more human-centered, and I am fortunate to be able to use my skillset toward something that I am passionate about: helping people feel embodied and connected to themselves and others. Not coincidentally, it was engaging in somatic work and BBTRS® that finally gave me the courage to leave academia after years of knowing it wasn’t a good fit.

I am a queer somatic practitioner, new to Philly, where I just moved with my wife and cat. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, being out for walks in nature, and doing creative stuff and writing.

The populations I tend to work with include (but aren’t limited to):

  • People exploring their gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, and other identities, who are seeking self-knowledge and harmony within themselves

  • Perfectionists, people-pleasers, et al. who want to improve their self-advocacy skills & boundaries to live according to their own values

  • Intellectualizers who want to feel more connected to, and at home in, their bodies

  • Therapists who don’t do somatics and are curious about deepening their own practice and improving their self-regulation to avoid burnout

  • Wellness providers, healers, bodyworkers, etc. who want to give themselves the attention and care that they give others

If any of this resonates with you, feel free to email me to schedule a free consultation!

By trying BBTRS I was hoping to strengthen the connection between my feelings and my body and be better aware of the ways intense emotions manifest in my body, as opposed to turning away from those sensations. I was skeptical at first, nervous of trying an experience that felt too alternative or “out there”. However, those concerns washed away after my first session. Rey is incredibly thoughtful in the way they lead sessions. They leave space for questions and are consistent with their check-ins ensuring I have never felt confused or overwhelmed. Working with Rey has been a deeply rewarding experience of building resiliency within myself and continuing my healing journey. –FCG
